Decodable books take a more structured approach to developing phonological awareness, phonics, and high-frequency words. The words in these books were carefully selected to contain phonemes (letter sounds) and graphemes (written letters) that have been previously taught. These short books primarily have words with regular spelling patterns, meaning each letter represents its most common sound, making the majority of the words in these books decodable. Decodable texts also include some high-frequency words (HFWs), or words that occur most often in written language. Children who engage with decodable texts have opportunities to apply newly learned phonics skills to written communication, thereby bringing more purpose and meaning to their learning. The rich illustrations and unpredictable stories allow for meaningful discussions focused on reading comprehension.
